When do cats stop growing?

Cat Growth Stages: What to Expect

As a cat owner, you watch your cat grow with the same care and love as you would a child. Just like human growth slows down and eventually stops, so does a cat’s growth. So, what are the stages of a cat's growth, and how can you tell when your cat's growth has completed?

Stages of Cat Growth

Just like people, cats grow at different rates. However, most domestic cats go through similar growth stages as they reach adulthood.

3 to 6 Months: At this age, kittens start losing their baby teeth, which are replaced by permanent adult teeth.

4 to 9 Months: This is when cats begin reaching sexual maturity. Female cats can be spayed at a young age, but veterinarians usually recommend waiting to neuter male cats until they are 5-6 months old.

6 Months: Your cat's rapid growth starts to slow down at this stage. While they’re still growing, you’ll notice they don’t seem to be growing as quickly as they did before.

9 to 12 Months: By this age, your cat’s growth is nearly complete. They should be about 95% of their full adult size. This period is considered adolescence, where your cat is almost fully grown.

18 Months: Most cats reach their full size by 18 months, averaging between 12-14 pounds (5.5-6.5 kg). This is when you can finally see your cat’s full grown size.

2 Years: By the age of two, cats reach full maturity. Although some cats might still show playful behavior, they are socially and behaviorally mature by this age.

Knowing these stages can help you estimate your cat's age if you're unsure. Many people find it useful to track their cat’s growth.

Growth Differences Between Male and Female Cats

Male cats are usually about 10-15% larger than female cats. Males often weigh closer to 14 pounds (6.5 kg) and may take a bit longer to reach full size. Female cats tend to be smaller and might reach their full size sooner. However, these are general rules, and individual cats can vary.

Growth Differences by Cat Breed

Growth can vary depending on the breed. Smaller breeds like Siamese or Sphynx cats generally reach their full size faster, while larger breeds like Maine Coons can take 2-3 years to fully mature.

Consulting your vet about the average size for your cat's breed can help you track their growth and determine when to switch from kitten food to adult food.

When to Switch to Adult Cat Food

Kittens have high energy needs and eat a lot to support their rapid growth. From 6 months to a year, veterinarians usually recommend feeding them three meals a day.

Around 10 to 12 months, it’s time to start thinking about transitioning to adult cat food. This timing may vary for larger breeds or cats that are still growing. You can ask your vet when it’s the right time to make the switch.

When transitioning to adult food, do it gradually. Start by mixing a small amount of adult food with your kitten’s current food, gradually increasing the amount of adult food over time.

Many cat owners wish their cats could stay kittens forever, but it’s important to understand and appreciate each stage of your cat’s growth as they develop into their unique adult selves.
