How fast can cats run?

Hello Cat Lovers!

Today, we’re exploring a new fact about cats: How fast can they run?

Cats sleep a lot, so we often think of them as lazy creatures. But don't underestimate their abilities! You might be surprised to learn that cats are actually faster than your average energetic dog. From now on, you'll know just how fast cats can run!

The Cat's Body

To understand how fast cats can run, let’s look at their body structure, which helps them achieve such speed.

  • Self-Correcting Ability: Cats can adjust their position in mid-air to land on their feet. This ability, called "righting reflex," is instinctive for cats and allows them to perform impressive feats due to their extreme flexibility.

  • Walking on Toes: Cats walk and run on their toes, which reduces friction with the ground and helps them conserve energy.

Imagine a slingshot or a spring—cat's back legs work similarly! They can propel themselves with a force six times their body weight, and each step can be three times their body length. Compare this to our walking, and you'll see the difference.

Speed Comparisons

Did you know the fastest wild animal in the cat family is the cheetah? Cheetahs can run up to 75 miles per hour! Since cheetahs are part of the cat family, this gives you an idea of how fast cats can be. But what about domestic cats? They can run up to 30 miles per hour!

It's important to note that the speed of domestic cats varies by breed. Here are the nine fastest domestic cat breeds: Egyptian Mau, Abyssinian, Somali, Bengal, Savannah, Manx, Siamese, Ocicat, and Oriental.

Watch the video below to see domestic cats in slow motion, and you’ll realize they’re like little cheetahs!

To Put It in Perspective

A cheetah can reach 75 miles per hour, while a domestic cat can reach 30 miles per hour. For comparison, parking lot speed limits are usually 15 miles per hour. So, cats can easily outrun a car in a parking lot. On the other hand, a car on a country road can go up to 30 miles per hour, which means cats can keep up with these cars easily!

Cats vs. Humans

Let’s compare cats with the fastest human, Usain Bolt. He can run about 28 miles per hour. That’s a small difference compared to the 30 miles per hour of cats, so cats are faster! Although Bolt is very close to their speed, we’re talking about the world’s fastest man.

Cats vs. Dogs

Can you guess the second fastest animal after the cheetah? It’s the Greyhound! This dog breed can run up to 43 miles per hour. While Greyhounds can outrun domestic cats, they don’t match the speed of cheetahs. Domestic cats can easily surpass local dogs, as they can run up to 15 miles per hour, which is half the speed of a domestic cat.

Why Do Cats Run Suddenly?

It’s their instinct! Don’t forget that cats have predatory roots. Although they are domesticated, their wild instincts remain. They are natural hunters and run because they want to chase and catch prey. Toys like laser pointers can trigger this instinct.

If your cat runs suddenly without any clear reason, check for fleas! Fleas can make cats restless. If this is the case, consider using flea baths designed for cats.

Cat Hyperesthesia Syndrome

If your cat’s running seems unusual, pay attention to other behaviours like excessive tail biting, licking, or scratching. These could indicate that your cat is suffering from Cat Hyperesthesia Syndrome.
